One amber ale, eleven specialty malts

Brewtubers 2025 Malt Experiment

For the 2025 experiment, the Brewtubers turned their attention to malt. Eleven club members brewed the same amber ale recipe, and each one swapped in a different specialty malt — from familiar names like melanoidin and Red X to curveballs like Opal 44 toffee malt, Carolina Biscuit, and a gluten-free millet malt called Griffin.

Reviewed side by side, the series becomes a practical flavor library: which malt brings honey-on-bread, which one tastes like the underside of a cookie, which adds color without flavor, and which one belongs in a barley wine instead of an amber. If you have ever stared at a homebrew shop's specialty malt shelf wondering what any of it actually tastes like in a finished beer, this playlist is the answer.
